Itinerary Overview: Day 1 – Departure from Malta & Arrival in Skopje
We will gather at Malta International Airport at 21:00hrs to complete check-in and security
procedures in time for our flight, which is scheduled to depart at 23:10hrs to Skopje. Upon arrival, transfer to our hotel in the capital city. Check-in and overnight stay in Skopje.
Itinerary Overview: Day 2 – Skopje & Matka Canyon
After breakfast, we embark on a guided exploration of Skopje, a city where history and modernity meet. Highlights include the Memorial House of Mother Teresa, the Archaeological Museum, and the lively Old Bazaar, one of the largest and best-preserved Ottoman bazaars in the Balkans.
In the afternoon, we travel to the spectacular Matka Canyon, a breathtaking natural retreat just outside the city. Here we enjoy a scenic boat ride surrounded by dramatic cliffs and visit the remarkable Vrelo Cave, one of Europe’s deepest underwater cave systems. Return to Skopje for overnight stay.
Itinerary Overview: Day 3 – Tetovo, Bigorski Monastery & Ohrid
Today after breakfast and check out, we journey towards the UNESCO-listed region of Ohrid, enjoying scenic landscapes along the way. Our first stop is Tetovo to admire the colourful Painted Mosque, renowned for its intricate decorations and unique architectural style.
We continue to the peaceful Saint John Bigorski Monastery, beautifully set within the mountains of the Mavrovo region and famous for its exquisite woodcarvings. A short visit to the charming village of Vevchani offers a glimpse into traditional Macedonian life before arriving in Ohrid for hotel check-in and overnight stay.
Itinerary Overview: Day 4 – Ohrid: The Jerusalem of the Balkans
This morning we discover Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage Site often referred to as the
“Jerusalem of the Balkans” due to its rich religious and cultural heritage. Our walking tour includes the Church of the Virgin Peribleptos, the impressive Church of Saint Sophia, the Ancient Theatre, and the iconic Church of Saint John at Kaneo, dramatically positioned above the lake.
We also visit traditional workshops producing the famous Ohrid Pearls, a centuries-old local craft. The afternoon is free to enjoy the lakeside atmosphere before overnight stay in Ohrid.
Itinerary Overview: Day 5 – St. Naum Monastery & Lake Ohrid Cruise
After breakfast, we embark on a relaxing boat cruise across Lake Ohrid, one of Europe’s oldest and most beautiful lakes. We stop at the Bay of Bones, a fascinating reconstruction of a prehistoric lakeside settlement built on stilts.
Our journey continues to the Monastery of St. Naum, located near the Albanian border in a tranquil natural seting. Here we enjoy a peaceful small-boat ride to the crystal-clear springs of the Black Drim River. Free time follows before returning by boat to Ohrid for overnight stay.
Itinerary Overview: Day 6 – Galichica National Park, Prespa Lake & Bitola
After breakfast and check out, we leave Ohrid and drive through the stunning landscapes of
Galichica National Park, offering unforgettable panoramic views over both Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa. Later, we visit the Ethnological Museum in Podmochani, showcasing traditional regional culture.
We then continue to Bitola, historically known as the “City of Consuls.” A guided walking tour includes elegant Shirok Sokak street, the Old Bazaar, and the historic Clock Tower. Overnight stay in Bitola.
Itinerary Overview: Day 7 – Ancient Heritage, Wine Traditions & Return to Skopje
Today we explore Heraclea Lyncestis, an ancient city founded by Philip II of Macedon, renowned for its beautifully preserved mosaics and Roman remains. We continue to the important archaeological site of Stobi, once a major crossroads of ancient civilizations.
Our cultural journey concludes with a visit to Stobi Winery, where we enjoy a wine tasting
accompanied by a traditional lunch. In the afternoon, we return to Skopje for check-in and
overnight stay.
Itinerary Overview: Day 8 – Kratovo, Kuklica Stone Town & Return to Malta
On our final day, we visit the historic town of Kratovo, famous for its medieval stone bridges and defensive towers set within an extinct volcanic crater. Then, we continue to Kuklica, known as the “Stone Town,” where unique natural rock formations create a mysterious landscape shaped by legend and time.
We conclude our journey with a visit to the impressive Monastery of St. Joachim Osogovski before transferring to Skopje Airport for our evening flight back to Malta.
